New Blog

2024/06/15

So I have yet another blog. I am moving my Github blog and here is why.

Avoiding Big Tech

Look I can’t escape big tech and neither can you, but when I can, I just avoid it entirely. That said, I am typing this in vim on my used Apple Macbook Pro running Asahi Linux Fedora Remix so I’m using something from IBM and Apple. But vim and hugo (which I am using for the blog engine) are not backed by giant commercial organizations looking to shove ever more ads into my day or push their workers to do unsafe things , I am doing what I can to not just blindly support big tech as they just take more and more advantage of their position of power. It is not good for us and it is technically not good for the giants that they’re allowed to fall back on lazy rent seeking behavior. I encourage you all to avoid it when you can, but otherwise not worry too much about it, there are more important things to consider.

Favoring Non-profits

Codeberg is a non-profit, when possible I support those over private entities. Why? Well I can’t always go with a non-profit for a reasonable service, but when I find one I’m happy to it as I donate to Codeberg and even pay them more than what it would cost me to use Github. Why? Well I wasn’t always a well paid software developer and I lived several very difficult years as a poor person in the USA. Open source software and things like Wikipedia changed my life entirely without bankrupting me, I was incredibly fortunate so as much as possible I want to give others the same chances I had. Funding non-profits helps maintain the environment I had in my 20s when I got into tech.
